INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM
IELTS the international standardised test of English language
proficiency is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge,ESOL
examinations,the British Council and IDP Education Pty Ltd.
There are two versions of the IELTS: the Academic Version and
the General Training Version.
The Academic Version is intended forthose whowant to enroll in
universities and other institutions of highereducation.The General
Training Version is intended for those planningto undertake non-
academic training or to gain work experience or immigration
purposes.
IELTS is accepted by most Australian, British, Canadian, Irish, New
Zealandand South African academic institutions, over 3,000 academic
institutions inthe United States and various professional organisations.
It is also arequirement for immigration to Australia, New Zealand and
Canada.No minimum score is required to pass the test.
An IELTS result or TestReport Form is issued to all candidates with a
scorefrom 0 (did not attempt the test)to 9 (expert user) . IELTS test
reports are valid for 2 years, unless theuser proves that he has
worked to maintain his level.Over 1.4 million candidates take IELTS
test each year.IELTS is recognised by more than 6000 instututions
in over 135 countries.
IELTS TEST STRUCTURE
All candidates must complete four Modules – Listening, Reading, Writing and
Speaking – to obtain a band score, which is shown on the IELTS Test Report
Form (TRF). All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules,
while the Reading and Writing Modules differ depending on whether the
candidate is taking the Academic or General Training Versions of the Test.
DURATION OF IELTS TEST
The total test duration is around 2 hours and 45 minutes for Listening, Reading
and Writing modules.
Listening: 40 minutes, 30 minutes for which a recording is played centrally and
additional 10 minutes for transferring answers onto the answer sheet.
Reading: 60 minutes
Writing: 60 minutes
Speaking: 11–14 minutes.
GRE
The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized
test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in
the United States, English-speaking countries,English taught
graduate and business programs world-wide. GRE is administered
by Educational Testing Services.
The exam aims to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning,
analytical writing and critical thinking skills that have been acquired
over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field
of study.
The GRE General Test is offered as a computer-based, computer
adaptive exam administered by selected qualified testing centers;
however, paper-based exams are offered in areas of the world where
computer-based testing is not available.
In the graduate school admissions process, the level of emphasis that
is placed upon GRE scores varies widely between schools and between
departments within schools.GRE scores are good for 5 years.
GRE TEST STRUCTURE
There are three sections on the GRE test:
Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, and Analytical Writing.The GRE
Verbal Ability section tests basic proficiency in the English language,
while the Analytical Writing section tests your ability to compose a
clear and thoughtful response to a simple topic.
GMAT
The Graduate Management Admission Test is a computer standardized test in mathematics and the English language for measuring aptitude to succeed academically in graduate business studies. Business schools use the test as a criterion for admission into graduate business administartion programs principally in the United States, but also in other English-speaking countries.
GMAT TEST STRUCTURE
The exam is intended to measure verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills.The test takes about four hours to complete and scores are valid for five years.The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) is the first section of the test. This is followed by the Quantitative section, and the test concludes with the Verbal Ability section.
TOEFL
The Test of English as a Foreign Language evaluates the ability of an individual to use and understand English in an academic setting.It is an admission requirement for non native English speakers at many English-speaking colleges and universities.It is administered worldwide.
A TOEFL score is valid for two years.Colleges and universities usually consider only the most recent TOEFL score.
TOEFL TEST CONTENT
The TOEFL iBT test is given in English and administered via the internet. There are four sections (listening, reading, speaking and writing) which take a total of about four and a half hours to complete and each section is taken online.
